Rogues by George R. R. Martin Book Review

“How the Marquis Got His Coat Back” by Neil Gaiman

I don’t remember this tale so well, to be honest i enjoyed it but felt lost in it. I later found this was a character from Neverwhere (on my TBR), maybe because i wasn’t expecting a fantastical adventure or because i didn’t understood a thing i just enjoyed it. I like the character personality, i guess that might be good for Neverwhere.

“Provenance” by David W. Ball

Nazi-collector of art, i don’t remember a lot sadly. I read it a few months back.

“What Do You Do?” by Gillian Flynn

What the actual f*?

  • Short and sweet: check
  • Creepy and mindf*cking: check

You can tell this is from Gillian specially after “Sharp Objects”, for me it followed the same lines. The plot? I can’t say a word without spoiling everything, the main point is the same through all the book the bad and the ugly. Just read it if you can and are a fan of Gillian. Totally mind blowing.

“A Better Way to Die” by Paul Cornell

Clone school, parallel worlds and subplot. Nice story but it could be more detailed (since i didn’t understood it for 80% of reading it). First time reading Paul Cornell, a lot of descriptions but it didn’t grab me.

“A Year and a Day in Old Theradane” by Scott Lynch

This was awesome! Fast pace, intriguing, unique and a true fantasy adventure.
Some things were missing, but even with that 5 out 5 really.
I have a feeling i would really like Scott Lynch books.

“The Caravan to Nowhere” by Phyllis Eisenstein

Well, a nice surprise. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this story as much has i did, because it was a known character.
The way drugs were portrait felt real and even with a small space for character grown and plot twists, it managed to surprised me.

“Bent Twig” by Joe R. Lansdale

Second best story in the all book (first being the Gillian Flynn one), the one from GRRM is not a story is the all goal of me reading this xD

Quick, with funny characters, could ask more anything more. It’s dark but the comedy does a great job at reliving it. I kinda want to read more about them.

“The Lightning Tree” by Patrick Rothfuss

Pretty cool, from someone who never read Patrick Rothfuss this story made me want to read more. Maybe it was the character.

“Now Showing” by Connie Willis

I was so tired of so many short stories i didn’t read this.

The Rogue Prince, or, A King’s Brother” by George R.R. Martin

The moment i was waiting for, this short story. Was it worthy? Actually yes. I really liked knowing everything about Westeros and that the present events (GoT events) are just repetitions of the past. How marriage works and how the crown is never safe.

Overall 4 out of 5 just because some short stories were amazing.

Stay awesome,

Hollow City – Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children Book 2

Untitled-1

Hello!

Long time no see i know… It as not being easier writing posts and the sudden reading slump hasn’t helped. But i finally finished Hollow City!!!
Hollow City is the sequel to Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children, so expect this review to be small in the spoiler free section. The first book will be adapted to cinemas by Tim Burton so i have a good feeling about it.

No synopsis today because the one on GoodReads has spoilers.

The book has the same POV as the first book, Jacob, and amazing photographs to illustrate the story.

I really love this photos, the creepiness is the thing that makes me keep reading. I found this book really cool but i also found it dragged a little in some parts. But this parts were really interesting, world building wise.

The first book really felt like a standalone, but if you enjoyed the first book this book is a must. This does end in a cliffhanger, big big one. But i think the third one will me amazing, if it follows the spirit of the end of this one.

If you haven’t read the first book and you like creepy things, horror stories with a pinch of historical fiction give the first one a go! I have this one 4 out of 5 stars.

Sharp Objects Book Review

Untitled-1

Hello!

This weekend i finished “Sharp Objects” by Gillian Flynn. This is her first novel and it’s quite different from her most popular novel “Gone Girl“. After reading “Gone Girl” i got curious about her other novels, i never was into thriller and with her i was kinda of liking it. I had two options: “Sharp Objects” and “Dark Places”. After seeing some reviews i noticed most people don’t like “Sharp Objects” because it’s really dark. I will still read “Dark Places” before seeing the movie. My decision was made after Lindsey Rey video about Gillian Flynn.

As Camille works to uncover the truth about these violent crimes, she finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Clues keep leading to dead ends, forcing Camille to unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past to get at the story. Dogged by her own demons, Camille will have to confront what happened to her years before if she wants to survive this homecoming.

This is a small synopsis, the one in Goodreads in too big.

I really enjoyed the plot. So dark that is actually amazing. We start in a very strange environment, Camille going home after years of rehab and we don’t understand why. On every chapter we learn something new about Camille or her family.
For a small book we get so much character development. The only thing i have to complain are the big chapters, but that isn’t bad if it’s your thing.

Unfortunately this is one of those books where knowing to much isn’t good. The more you go blind (specially in the character department) the better. Of course that knowing this is a thriller, with two homicides and the mystery surrounding them isn’t bad. Also, this book has some triggers for self-arm, don’t read it if you aren’t ready for something like that. It’s very heavy in the psychological and mental illness department.

So give it a try, it’s the fastest of book until the middle, it has nothing to do with “Gone Girl” so don’t expect something like that. Be prepared for dark subjects and some plot twists.

I gave it 4.7 just because of the slow start!

We Were Liars Book Review

Untitled

Hello!
I finally put my hands on We Were Liars by E. Lockhart!
I read it in so little time, this book made me so curious at every chapter. Every time i stopped reading one i will be: just one more, the next is so little, just one more. Then i realized i was already half way… To me this is a big deal! (to be fair, the book has really big font!)

If you read anything about this book, by now you know to go into it blind. I maintain the same opinion. I loved going in so blind. Everything is new and you don’t know what to expect. So, this spoiler free review is going to be so tiny tiny small… Because i can’t say a thing :P. Just read the book, it’s a mystery, nothing over extraordinary but a good one!

I gave it 5 stars, short book great story.
